HOUSING COUNSELING PROGRAM

PROGRAM FOR RECOVERING PUERTO RICANS FROM HURRICANES IRMA AND/OR MARÍA.

The Government of Puerto Rico, through the Puerto Rico Department of Housing, is proud to present the Housing Counseling Program, financed with funds allocated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which will provide counseling services to people affected by hurricanes Irma and/or Maria.

HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agencies are experienced, impartial and professional. Individual counseling and group courses provide education on budgeting, credit protection, foreclosure prevention and more relevant information.

THIS PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE FREE SERVICES TO RESIDENTS OF THE 78 MUNICIPALITIES OF PUERTO RICO.

    A HOUSING COUNSELOR MAY:

    • Coordinate a meeting in person or by telephone.
    • Evaluate your housing, financial and other problems caused by the hurricanes.
    • Discuss and recommend the best resources available to assist you.
    • Assist in the collection of the required documents.
    • Recommend financial and other tools to solve your current problems and prevent future problems.
    • Support you throughout the recovery process.

    This program offers free counseling services for residents of the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico.

    AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE

    Services for homeowners, renters, homebuyers, homeowners at risk of foreclosure and homeless citizens.

    HOUSING COUNSELING AGENCIES PROVIDE A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Disaster preparedness and recovery
      Assists clients in preparing for disasters and in overcoming the unique needs in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and/or Maria.
    • Homeowner education
      Information and resources regarding home improvement/ rehabilitation, resolving or preventing mortgage delinquency or default, fair housing laws, non-delinquency post purchase workshops and more.
    • Renter’s counseling
      Information and resources for various rental topics to assist renters maintaining a safe affordable housing.
    • The home buying process
      Assists individuals in understanding the basic steps of home ownerships, the necessary resources and how to work with key players in the process.
    • Financial literacy, credit repair, debt management and budgeting
      Educates individuals on personal finances, credit repair, building budgets and more.
    • Relocation counseling
      Provides support throughout relocation processes, including identifying replacement homes, homeowner education, connection with social service providers and more.
    • Foreclosure prevention and loss mitigation
      Assists individuals in the creation of short- and long-term plans to bring their mortgage to current and identify alternatives to foreclosure, including loss mitigation.
    • Applying for public and private resources
      Connects clients to other resources that provide home repair relief and emergency assistance.
    • Strategies to prevent fraud and scams
      Provides information and resources to assist individuals in recognizing predatory lending practices and other scams.
    • Homeless counseling
      Information on emergency shelter stays, transitional housing, emergency food and shelter Programs. Counselors also assist clients dealing with eviction as a renter or other circumstances that impair their occupancy in affordable, decent and sanitary housing.
